THERE was nothing pretty about it but the Wollongong Hawks got the morale-boosting win they badly needed last night over Perth.

Highs and lows were in plentiful supply after the Hawks blew a 15-point lead to fall behind by 10, only to come back from the dead to steal victory on Dusty Rychart's three-point bomb.

Despite making just 32 per cent of their shots, the Hawks improved to 2-3 for the season and will head to Perth with a shot of confidence for next Wednesday's rematch.

"We wanted to win so bad. I've never met a group that works harder and wants to win as much as this group," Wollongong captain Mat Campbell said.

"There's a lot of doubters because we started a little slow, and we're still trying to find our feet as a team. A win like that is going to go a long way for our confidence and help us realise we are a quality team in this league."

Hawks forward Glen Saville got a win in his 400th game for the club, while coach Eric Cooks will remember his 50th game at the helm for the right reasons.

"It's a great milestone for anyone to play 400 games," Campbell said.

"Sav's been a big part of our club and we wanted to make sure it was a memorable 400th game for him."

Cooks was proud of his team's comeback after they almost threw the game away.
