Perth Takes Out at BAFTA Awards 2009

Friday February 13, 2009

Perth locals, the late actor Heath Ledger and visual effects specialist Nathan McGuinness, win awards at the prestigious Orange British Academy Awards (BAFTA) held in London on 8 February.

Heath Ledger, born in Perth in 1979, won the award for Best Supporting Actor at the recent 2009 BAFTA Awards ceremony. Charles Roven, Dark Knight's producer, received the award on behalf of Ledger.

Nominees for the award included Brad Pitt – Burn After Reading, Philip Seymour Hoffman – Doubt, Brendan Gleeson – In Bruges, and Robert Downey Jr for Tropic Thunder.

Another Perth local, Nathan McGuiness, a visual effects specialist who worked on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, was happy to hear that it won the award for best Visual Effects.

Unfortunately he couldn't attend the ceremony. "I wasn't at the BAFTAs because it was my brother's wedding and I had to put my family first so I opted not to go," McGuiness told Perth's West Australian in a recent report.
