Anticipated West Australian Symphony Orchestra Tour to Japan Cancelled

Wednesday February 18, 2009

The West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) in Perth has cancelled their tour to Japan this year because of the Australian and Japanese economic downturns.

WASO';s sponsor, the North West Shelf Australia LNG, Perth, was going to build their relationships and reputation with Japan, celebrate the 20-year-anniversary of LNG exports to Japan and showcase the creative talent of the orchestra during the tour.

But because of the economic downturns as a result of the global financial crisis, it became no longer achievable for the orchestra based in Perth to go ahead with the tour to Japan.

'A fantastic opportunity was presented to the orchestra, however given current circumstances this option is no longer viable,'; said Janet Holmes a Court, WASO Chairman in Perth. 'Our association with the North West Shelf Australia LNG has been a long one and we are delighted that they will continue to support the orchestra through the composer-in-residence program.';

Participants of the North West Shelf LNG Venture are: BHP Billiton Petroleum (North West Shelf) Pty Ltd, Shell Development (Australia) Pty Ltd and Woodside Energy Ltd (Operator), BP Developments Australia Pty Ltd, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, Japan Australia LNG (MIMI) Pty Ltd.
