Wave Energy Technology to Flourish in Perth and Western Australia
Wednesday February 25, 2009
The Western Australian Government announced that it will invest $12.5million for low emissions wave energy power station at Albany.
The power station will be positioned in the ocean off Albany's coast and would operate by pumping units that collect wave energy (pressurised water) on the sea bed. The wave energy can then be used to generate electricity and desalinate water.
"Today's decision not only invests in the ingenuity of WA industry, but provides added support on the fringes of the State's electricity grid," said Energy Minister, Peter Collier in Perth Now.
Funding for the project comes will come from Western Australia's Low Emissions Energy Development Fund and the company, Carnegie Corporation, in Perth, will head the first stages of development that is set for completion by 2013.
Managing director of Perth's Carnegie Corporation Dr Michael Ottaviano said the company would submit an application with the intention to grow wave energy technology.
To reach the total project';s investment, the Perth-based company is expected to put in $3 for every $1 the government puts in.
