Fremantle, Perth Residents Oppose Export Giant From Using Port

Tuesday March 10, 2009

Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri expressed his concern to Colin Barnett that the residents of Perth's outer suburb, Fremantle contest the idea of having lead exports from the Fremantle port.

At Parliament House, Mr Tagliaferri argued against the move saying that the people in the Perth suburb opposed the proposal at a public hearing over the weekend to Mr Barnett as well as Opposition Leader Eric Ripper.

The Perth State Government has given company Magellan Metals permission to export lead carbonate from the Port of Fremantle in Perth.

"I am here today to deliver their message, loud and clear, that the people of Fremantle don't want lead carbonate shipped through Fremantle and run the risk of contaminating Fremantle in the same way as Esperance," he told Perth Now.

"It is the council's position to oppose the transport of lead through Fremantle and this reflects the views of the community.

"The disaster in Esperance in 2005 really clearly shows the dreadful health and environmental devastation of lead contamination and as a council we want to protect the people of Fremantle from that," he said in Perth.
