City of Perth Decides to Implement More Two-Way Streets
Wednesday March 11, 2009
The City of Perth discussed on Tuesday night about changing CBD roads from one-way to two-way to improve flow of traffic.
Proposed areas for change include Murray, Hay and Barrack, Horseshoe Bridge and The Esplanade and Riverside Drive and implementation would occur over five years.
Approval is then needed from Main Roads WA and extensive consultation with businesses close by will go ahead about issues such as who pays for expensive changes, for example, moving traffic lights, installing signs, crossings, footpaths as well as signals.
Additionally, the Department of Planning and Infrastructure need to be involved to move taxi bays and Public Transport Authority bus routes through Perth.
"Further work will be required to determine the budget allocation and programmed expenditure for the proposed staging of two-way traffic re-introduction," it told Perth Now.
"In William Street, where we did convert to two-way a year ago, there are issues with some multi-storey buildings that only have underground car parks that were configured to turn right.
"Suddenly, wanting traffic to leave those car parks and turn left, means some re-design is required."
