Security at Perth and Karratha Failed to Detect Gun in Boy's Luggage

Thursday March 12, 2009

A 14-year-old boy was charged at Cairns Airport by Queensland Police after two guns were claimed to have been in his bag.

The boy and his 11-year-old brother flew from Karratha to Perth Airport to Cairns where they were to meet their father.

Officers in Cairns checked the boy';s luggage on Monday after receiving intelligence from the Australian Federal Police to find two firearms, knives and ammunition in Karratha.

Perth Now believes that the older boy allegedly stole the weapons from a sports and firearms shop where he had been employed, however Detective Sergeant Steve Perejmibida, from Karratha police could not confirm this.

'The biggest worry is that the weaponry has got through the airports,'' Det-Sgt Perejmibida told Perth Now.

The 14-year-old boy has been charged with possession of ammunition and three counts of unlawful possession of a weapon and one count each of possession of ammunition, and will appear in Weipa Children';s Court on 17 March.
