Cane Toads Spread Through Western Australia
Monday March 2, 2009
Cane toads are spreading around the country as people observe them moving from Northern Territory and into Western Australia.
Recently a cane toad was found at a check point on the border between the Northern Territory and Western Australia last Friday. Officials are claiming that the introduced amphibian has begun breeding at Lake Argyle in Kimberley.
A spokesman from the Department of Environment and Conservation told ABC News that they are predicting that many cane toad will enter Western Australia in about 12 months reaching more populated areas by Christmas.
The department and other environmental groups hope to stop the toads from spreading into Western Australia territory and have been working with groups in the community to slow the expansion into the state.
Cane toad packs for residents in Kununurra, Wyndham and Halls Creek have information about how to safely identify, kill and dispose of the toads.
