WA Politicians' Wages Are Frozen
Monday March 23, 2009
As full-time employment in Western Australia decreases by 14,000, the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal has put on hold salary increases for Western Australian politicians.
The state's seven industrial relations commissioners have encountered wage freezes in the tight economic climate
"There are daily reports of workforce layoffs, reductions in working hours, cancellation of contracts and the dramatic deterioration in international trade,'' tribunal chairman Bill Coleman told Perth Now.
"The Tribunal considers that it is prudent to maintain remuneration at existing levels until it can be satisfied that the state of economy is sufficiently stable enough to sustain increases ...'
The Treasurer Troy Buswell supports the chairman's decision.
"They point out very strongly that it's reflective of their view of the economic climate and I think their observations have a lot of merit," he said.
"And perhaps this is a precedent for what we'll be seeing later on the year when they look at the salary levels of WA politicians and also other senior level bureaucrats in WA."
