Harvey Beef in Western Australia to Cut Pay

Monday March 30, 2009

Australian meat brand in Western Australia Harvey Beef issued a statement saying that in line with the Australian Meat Industry Employees Union it wanted to introduce a new two-year agreement to staff.

"This Agreement will enable the company to regain the cost competitiveness it must have for its long term sustainability," the statement read.

The agreement came after the Western Australian meat company cut 120 full time and 40 contractor employees' jobs and will reduce its remaining employees pay by up to 20 per cent.

A Harvey Beef spokesman said the union presently propose that workers reject the agreement but will recommend that the shorter deal be accepted by workers next week.

"We're confident that with the union's endorsement it will be accepted by the workers," the spokesman said.

He told PerthNow Business that if the agreement did not go through "there would be some tough decisions to be make".
