Perth Bushfire Scares Residents as it Travelled Dangerously Close to Homes
Saturday March 7, 2009
Perth's bushfire on Wednesday was believed to have been instigated by a 13-year-old boy.
The boy, who was claimed to have led a group that police suspected started the bushfire that began in Perth's north-east at Aveley on Wednesday, was reported to have been sorry for the panic and uproar that resulted from the fire.
"With everything that has been going on around the country with Victoria, and then to have three kids think that it's fun to do this…I think they should come here and clean up and just see what they've done," Perth resident Carina Seal told Channel Nine News.
Video footage shows that the fire came very close to Perth homes and burnt a front lawn of one home before 50 firefighters and five helitacs helped extinguish the flames.
The Fire and Emergency Services Authority said that about 40ha was burnt. Charges on the Perth boy have not yet been laid.
