Jobs Created For Indigenous Western Australians

Monday May 11, 2009

Indigenous Western Australians will sign an agreement today to ensure indigenous participation in a $185billion liquefied natural gas project that will get underway around 2011.

The Australian reports that the agreement, about to be made by the Kimberley Land Council and the unions, pushes for Aboriginal participation in the gas project, good conditions, wages and support for better recognition of Aboriginal land rights.

KLC chief executive Wayne Bergmann from Western Australia told Perth Now that:
"Unions have long been allies to local indigenous people in the struggle for land rights and better living standards."

To be developed at James Price Point, just 60km north of Broome, Woodside predicts 6000 fly-in, fly-out jobs will arise over the five-year construction phase of the $20billion Browse Basin LNG project, with many positions open to indigenous people at the time.
