Western Australian Government to Buy Millions Worth of Speed Cameras

Friday May 15, 2009

In a bid to reduce the amount of motor incidents, the Western Australian government will invest $30million in speed cameras in 2009-10.

As part of the implementation plan for the Towards Zero road safety strategy, Police Minister Rob Johnson announced yesterday that the money would be used to buy digital speed and red light cameras.

About $17million of speed camera revenues would go towards the Road Trauma Trust Fund annually.

The Western Australian government would also employ 350 police officers and 150 auxiliary police officers, and 200 administrative and expert civilian staff to support the fund, said Mr Johnson. The Perth Police Complex would begin construction in the next two years.

In opposition, the liberals previously stated that all speed camera revenues would go to the trust fund.
